Just Sweet, some yummy dumplings

A while ago, a friend and I stopped by popular shaved-ice and dessert shop Just Sweet in St. Marks, after a long, tiring but fulfilling day hitting the shops. Normally, it can be a bit difficult to find something hot, vegan and substantially filling around 11:00-12:00 a.m., but I was very pleased to find that they had these yummy veggie dumplings available.

In general, the Just Sweet menu is about 20% vegan friendly, as most of the drinks are made with condensed milk and their snacks with eggs and cream (the crepes, etc). However, if they can customize a dish, they will happily do so. I’ve had the shaved ice, which is nothing special but satisfies my cravings well enough.

The dumplings had a supple, thickish skin, and it seemed that the dough itself had been handmade (the menu does say the item is indeed a handmade dumpling). Each dumpling serving came with 6 substantial pieces and had a nice, white-cabbage and chive filling, which went lovely with the provided Japanese soy sauce.

In terms of value, the dumplings cost $4.50 for the 6, which I would say is not bad, since they did fill me up. Plus, you can’t beat the fact that they are open till 1 a.m. on the weekends.

The dumplings certainly satisfied my peckish appetite.
I liked the simple filling very much. Nothing too surprising, but hits the spot.

They also offer a “mixed vegetable vermicelli” which I haven’t tried yet, but will update the next time I am in search of a late-night snack in St. Marks!

Lan Café – A Home Away From Home

Vietnamese food has been one of the hardest things to find in a vegan version—which is odd because you’d think a cuisine that is wholly based on rice vermicelli and bean sprouts would have ample veggie options. Yet as I rudely discovered, Viets love to put beef and chicken broth in their noodle soups, which […]

Chocolate Wafer Mini Heart Cake

I’ve always been a proponent of making my own birthday cakes… why pay for an expensive, store-bought confection that’s not even fresh when you can make your own delectable desserts? So of course, I opted to create a chocolate cake encased in hazelnut wafers for Ray’s birthday. I love this recipe from The Joy of […]

Dad’s Delicious Canadian Cookies

Once in a while I’ll come across a cookie so perfect, it blurs the line between savory and sweet and thankfully, today was one of those days. My mom brought home a small 2 cookie package of Dad’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies from Canada that blew my taste buds out of the water! They had the […]
